It’s my first time in Bali and I have fallen totally in love. With the beaches, the beautiful coral reefs, the rice fields, the mountains, the small villages, the temples and the always happy and friendly people.

There is just one thing which makes me very sad. It’s the waste which is everywhere and the common behavior of throwing waste in the environment, the rivers and the sea. Marine parks: the fish and the science are growing

Recent research supports observations from Reef Check Foundation Indonesia that marine reserves increase the diversity and abundance of plants and animals within them.

The Partnership for Interdisciplinary Studies of Coastal Oceans (PISCO) has just completed a review of more than 200 peer-reviewed recent scientific publications about 150 marine protected areas in 61 countries, and has concluded:

  • Biomass, or the mass of animals and plants, increased an average of 446%.
  • Density, or the number of plants or animals in a given area, increased an average of 166%.
  • Body Size of animals increased an average of 28%.
  • Species Density, or the number of species, increased an average of 21% in the sample area. Baca selengkapnya »

Last week, Reef Checkers from across the Indonesian archipelago came together in Tejakula, Buleleng, North Bali to share experiences and take part in a reef resilience workshop.

The sessions were attended by delegates from more than 15 locations around Indonesia, including; Sumatera, Java, Bali, Lombok, Kalimantan and Sulawesi.

The JKRI’s (Indonesian ReefCheck Network) Dinamisator, Jensi Sartin said the meeting and workshop are an important way of sharing what is being tried in different areas.

“Indonesia is home to some of the world’s richest coral reefs, but all are facing increasing threats from human activity and climate change.”
