It’s my first time in Bali and I have fallen totally in love. With the beaches, the beautiful coral reefs, the rice fields, the mountains, the small villages, the temples and the always happy and friendly people.
There is just one thing which makes me very sad. It’s the waste which is everywhere and the common behavior of throwing waste in the environment, the rivers and the sea. At this time of the year it is easy to make resolutions for the coming year which may be hard to stick to.
But here are four easy and practical ways from Reef Check Indonesia to help you be a responsible diver or snorkeler and do your bit to help protect Indonesia’s coral reefs.
Coral reefs are vast ecosystems living around thousands of pieces of coral. Coral are not rocks, they are thousands of living coral polyps who build hard shells to live in. These structures are more fragile than they look, and every time you touch a piece of living coral you are killing it. Be very careful if you are taking photography or videos underwater, because when you are focusing on the perfect shot, it is very easy to accidentally touch coral or stir up sediment with your fins. Also plan your entry and exit routes from the beach to the reef so you avoid walking on coral.
